Cross Connection

A cross connection is a link between a potable water system (water that is safe to drink) and a non-potable system (water or other liquids that are not considered safe to drink) or a system of questionable quality. Any arrangement of pipes, fittings, fixtures, or assemblies that connect a non-potable system to a potable water system.

Backflow

Backflow is the reversal of the normal direction of water flow which causes the drawing of the potentially contaminated water through the unprotected cross connection into the potable water supply. Backflow can occur by back pressure or back siphonage.

Cross Connection and Backflow programs are required by the State and Federal Government to protect water systems from potential contamination. All testable backflow devices are required to be tested at completion of install and annually thereafter.  This includes residential customers with irrigation backflow assemblies. 

The City of Mebane is now contracting with BSI (Backflow Solutions Inc.) as a third party vendor for backflow test report submittals.

You can also help the Public Utilities Department by notifying us of any potential violations including stealing water through a fire hydrant or making a connection to a hydrant without proper backflow protection.
