Flooding

Flood prone areas are subject to periodic inundation which can result in loss of life, property, and health. Obstructions in floodplains can cause increases in flood heights and velocities and are vulnerable to flooding and other hazards. All drainage features have a natural floodplain. Certain floodplains are identified by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as Special Flood Hazard Areas, which is land in the floodplain subject to a one percent or greater chance of being flooded in any given year.

The City of Mebane participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, which is managed by FEMA. The NFIP provides flood insurance to property owners, renters, and businesses, and works with communities to adopt and enforce floodplain management regulations that help mitigate flooding effects. The City of Mebane's floodplain regulations are found in Article 5 of the Mebane Unified Development Ordinance. Property located in a floodplain requires additional permitting through the City of Mebane. After a major flood event, City of Mebane staff are responsible for assessing damage to structures in Special Flood Hazard Areas.
