Spillway Update

Attention Mebane Residents:

This is a CodeRED message from the City of Mebane. The evacuation notice issued on July 6 for nine homes located within the Lake Michael Spillway Project breach inundation zone is now lifted.
Residents who were notified by the Mebane Police Department and the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office of the need to evacuate may safely return home. Four additional pumps brought in yesterday have significantly lowered Lake Michael’s water levels. City and project engineers have confirmed that the lake water levels no longer pose a threat to nearby residents.
As a reminder, approximately 10 inches of rain from Tropical Storm Chantal overwhelmed the temporary water system control at the construction site, causing the lake to crest the temporary coffer dam. In accordance with the Emergency Action Plan and out of an abundance of caution, nine homes were evacuated, though the dam remained intact. The City and project engineers will continue to monitor site progress and weather conditions closely and take all necessary precautions to ensure public safety in the event of another major storm event.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
