About
The Planning and Zoning Department oversees growth and development within the City of Mebane. Key department responsibilities include:
- maintaining and enforcing the Mebane Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), which governs the use of land and structures in the City’s planning jurisdiction;
- managing current planning needs such as zoning permits, rezoning requests, special use requests, variance requests, annexation requests, subdivision platting, and site plan reviews;
- implementing and maintaining the City's adopted long-range plans to guide growth and development in Mebane; and
- providing technical and administrative staff support to various boards and commissions.
The Planning and Zoning Department is also responsible for the review of all new residential, commercial, and industrial development within the Mebane Planning Jurisdiction to ensure consistency with the Mebane UDO and long-range plans. All construction must be approved by the Inspections Department. These two departments work closely during the permitting process for all development activities and construction in Mebane.
Staff also administers the Technical Review Committee meetings, which are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month. These meetings are open to the public and are currently held virtually.
