We attempt to improve how graves are delineated at Oakwood and Mebane Memorial Cemeteries. To avoid any mistakes, we are asking the owners of the cemetery plots to provide Mebane with the actual deed of purchase. We cannot lay off a grave without the plot’s deed, completed Mebane Interment Order Form/Attestation form, or other proper attestation documentation showing the deceased is allowed to be buried in a specific plot.

If the family members cannot provide this documentation, they should contact the City Clerk, who will work with them to determine ownership. If the family has the deed of purchase, we need to meet with them at the cemetery so they can confirm the location is correct. The interment form will be completed at the cemetery and someone from the family will sign acknowledging the grave location.

Once the interment form is completed and the deed information provided, please allow forty-eight to seventy-two hours for the grave to be marked. City staff will contact you or the funeral home once the grave has been marked. Also,  city staff is not available to mark graves on weekends or holidays, so please plan accordingly.

We appreciate your understanding of this change in procedure, and we can all agree that this is in the best interest of the families involved.
