Juneteenth Freedom Day Community Celebration
The City of Mebane is pleased to present the Juneteenth Freedom Day Community Celebration in collaboration with our community partners.
This celebration takes place annually in mid-June as close to the federal holiday as possible.
In honor of the Juneteenth federal holiday, the City of Mebane and our community partners celebrate African American culture and history.
Juneteenth is the oldest known commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. General Gordon Granger announced that all enslaved people in Texas were free by order of the President of the United States on June 19, 1865. The announcement came two-and-a-half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official January 1, 1863.
